Chapter 17

Luke awoke to a throbbing arm, partly from the wolf bite and partly from Pike shaking him.

The grizzled old man squinted at him. “Get up. We got to make some lunch.”

Holding his arm, Luke struggled out of bed. The open door showed the sun to be almost midway through the sky. “Didn’t realize I slept so long.”

Pike pointed a spoon at his arm. “That wolf bite must have put some poison in ya. Hopefully not the rabies.”

A quick rush shot his blood through his veins. Luke undid the bandage and grimaced at the deep red and angry punctures. Wincing, Luke walked over to the stove. “Where’s the salt?”

Pike wrinkled his nose. “What ya want with salt?”

“I’m going to pour it in the wounds.”

Pike rummaged in the box of food supplies and came out with a sack of salt. “Never heared of that.”

Luke took the sack. He washed the wound with water and then poured salt into the wound. “An old trick Doc Fields showed me.” He sucked in a breath as the crystals stung the raw flesh.

Footsteps echoed on the porch. “I see you finally woke up.” Eli’s cold eyes raked over Luke. “Stick around. We’ll be going over the next job.”

The air turned stale. Pain coated his arm as Luke fought to breathe. Everything in him wanted to shout that he would never go along. Instead, he dully nodded.

A shadow passed over the doorway. Jake walked in and glared at Luke. “You’ll join us this time.”

A chill raced over him. He wasn’t sure if it was from the poison in his system or the venom in the words. Eyeing the men, he chose to keep quiet and let them play out their hand.

Eli grabbed a plate from Pike. “I got an idea on how to use Luke.” Sitting at the table, Eli continued. “We’ve hit most the big towns around. They’re likely to be watching for us. Since we all have posters, we’ll send Luke. He can scout out and tell us which towns have banks. And we’ll do the rest.”

“I think we ought to hit Plainview. I hear an English dandy moved in with lots of cash.” Jake twirled his revolver around.

“That’s awful close don’t you think?” Morgan pressed close to Eli.

Brick rubbed his shoulder and then dug a fork into his plate. “Might be good. We could get a bundle and head somewhere else. Place is getting too crowded for me. Heard of a gang on the Wind River farther north.”

Jake stopped twirling his gun and held it up in the air as if he were aiming at unseen dangers. “Splittin’ up might not be a bad idea. I don’t trust Choirboy. And I don’t like the way you’re always protectin’ him.”

Eli glared at the men. “There’ll be no splitting up. I figure we got maybe two or three more good hits, and then we’ll have enough to go to Mexico and live like kings.”

A shot rang out followed by a piercing scream.

“Vic?” Morgan ran out of the shack.
